Buland Darwaza or ‘The Gate of Victory’ is the main entrance to the palace at Fatehpur Sikri, 43km from Agra, India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar to celebrate his victory over Gujarat. It is the highest gateway in the world and an outstanding example of the Mughal architecture.The name ‘Buland Darwaza’ comes from the Persian language, which means ‘mighty gate’. The monument stands almost 43 feet tall on a majestic pedestal and is 54 feet above the ground. One has to climb 42 steps in order to reach the gate.The main gateway has a famous inscription that says, ” The work is a bridge, just pass over but, never build houses”.

Diwan-i-Khas

Diwan-i-Khas or the ‘Hall of Private Audiences’ is a grand chamber in Fatehpur Sikri. This is the place where Emperor Akbar had discussion with other people on matters relating to different religions.It is a plain square building with four chhatris on top however it is famous for its central pillar which has amazing designs. It is one of the most prestigious monuments which offers an excellent glimpse of the life in the Mughal Court in Fatehpur Sikri.The place is open all days from 7AM-6PM and there is no entry fee. This place is a must visit for those who are interested to know more about the Mughal Era.

Jodhabai Palace

Jodhabai Palace also known as ‘Mariam-uz-Zamani Palace’ is one of the charming examples of the architectural styles of the Rajputs and the Mughals. The palace was used as a residence for the various queens of Akbar as well as other members of the Harem.The architecture of the building is a rich amalgamation of the Hindu Rajputana styles with the Islamic Mughal style due to Jodhabai belonging to the Hindu Rajputana clans of Amer. Many Hindu motifs like Swan, Parrots, Lotus, etc have been used in the architecture of the building which confirms that the owner of the palace was a Hindu lady. The super structure of the palace comprises of chhatris, chhaparkhats with eight pillars, semi circular domes and triangular khaprel roofs.The palace is situated at a distance of 1km from Fatehpur Sikri Railway Station. It is open on all days except Friday from 7AM-6PM. The entry fee is Rs 20 for Indians & Rs 260 for foreigners. Thus, this place gives an insight into the royal lifestyle of the Mughal Queens.

Jama Mosque

Jama Mosque also known as ‘Friday Mosque’ is the largest mosque in India. It is also one of the most visited tourist attraction in Agra District. It was built in the 17th century in the World Heritage Site in Fatehpur Sikri which is almost 540 feet in lenght (165 metres).The structure of the Mosque is rectangular and is made of carved red sandstone. The interior of the mosque is decorated with carved Mirhabs and is one of the most prized collection of the Mughal architecture. Some of the designs of the mosque reflect beautiful Iranian architecture.

Birbal Bhavan

Birbal Bhavan is located in Fatehpur Sikri near Jodhabai Palace. It was built in 1571 as a part of Akbar’s Harem for two of his favourite queens but it ended up becoming home to his courtier Raja Birbal.It combines Mughal type of architecture with Persian art. It is made of red sandstone with arches and columns. The Birbal Bhawan is known for its intricate design and double domed architecture, which was designed to keep the building cool during summers.

Panch Mahal

The Panch Mahal meaning ‘Five Level Palace’ was also built by Akbar. It consists of 5 stories built in a pyramidal structure supported by 176 columns. This is a type of structure having design elements of a Buddhist Temple.The structure is also called the ‘Badgir‘ or the wind catcher tower and the pool in front of the Panch Mahal is called ‘Anoop Talab’. The main purpose of constructing Panch Mahal is known to be entertainment and is often used for various theatrical, musical and dance performances.The palace is open on all days from 8AM-6PM. The entry fee is Rs 10 for Indians & Rs 250 for foreigners and children up to the age of 15 can enter for free.
